Our next tournament begins on Monday 21 May. It is the Club Winter Tournament [Rapid Play 30 minutes each for the whole game] Rounds 1 and 2. This tournamant will run for 12 nights but you do not have to play every night. This means that people in inter-club teams can still enter. The standard FIDE rules for 30 minutes chess apply. The club's Rapid Play (30/30) tournament goes through to August 13 (2 rounds per night). The winner is determined by strike rate out of players who have played at least 16 games out of a possible 24. There will also be a handicap prize. The Arbiter for this event is Gordon Struk, phone 9913 8898. The draw will be made for each round with only those people who are actually present for the round.

The Rules

Apart from the obvious ones, like 30 minutes for all your moves or you lose, our special rules are:

    * This is a tournament where you don't have to play every week,
so inter-club team members can still play.
    * The winner is determined by strike rate out of players who
have played at least 16 games out of a possible 24.
    * There will also be a handicap prize. This goes to the highest
strike rate by a player Under 1500 or unrated who has played
      at least 16 games.
    * Once you have played 16 games your strike rate cannot go down - only the same or up.
    * Strike rate is percentage of won games converted to a decimal.
      So 3 out of 4 = 75% = 0.75 strike rate.

Question : Winners play winners? or Equal Strike rates play Equal strike rates?

Answer: The draw is done as much as possible on strike rate, so someone with 1 out of 1 = strike rate 100 may play someone with 4 out of 4 e.g. The draw is worked out by a program developed by NSWCA Ratings Officer Steve Carratt called "wchess". [Jonathan Adams]
