- 03/11/2005 - Some very sad news. One of our members, Tu Huynh, died at the weekend. Tu's funeral is tomorrow at 2.30 PM and the venue is the Camellia Chapel, New Macquarie Park Crematorium, corner Delhi & Plassey Road, Macquarie Park/ Ryde. Paul Burke, Bruce Douglas and I will be attending and if anyone else is able to come it would be great to see you there. Note no flowers by request – instead donations to the Spastic Centre. - 27/08/2005 - Last night at a very successful dinner for members and partners the club presented our President GORDON MILLER with life membership in honour of his 25 years of dedicated and selfless service for the club on the committee and for many of those years as President. - 05/08/2005 - Charles Bleyer (U1800) and Graham Dick (U1600) are definite Grade Match Board Prize Winners. There is a possibility that our hard-working captain Chris Dimock, who finished with 6/7 (>71%) in the U 1600, may also be awarded a board prize. Seventy percent of 11 games is 7.7 and it depends whether this is rounded down to 7 as to whether he qualifies for a board prize. [Jonathan]

- 18/07/2005 - In today's chess column in the SMH it is reported that David Webster and Max Illingworth came equal second with three other players on 6 points in the Under 18 Division of the NSW Junior Championship conducted in the School holidays. - 16/06/2005 - The NSW Open was held over the recent long weekend. There were 56 players in the Open Division and 58 in the U1600 Division. Congratulations to Norman Greenwood who came equal first in the U1600 with 6/7. Doug Moore also played in the U1600 and scored 4/7. Max Illingworth played in the Open and came up against Ian Rogers, Australia's top GM in Round 3. Henning Muller also played in the Open. The results are on the NSWCA website. - 06/06/2005 - The inter-club Grade matches continue this week. Best wishes to all 3 of our teams. In Round 3 both our Under 1800 team and our Under 1400 team are at home tonight - against North Sydney and Wests respectively. On Wednesday our U 1600 team has a ”home” match against Wollongong, which (like all matches against Wollongong) will be played at St George Leagues Club. (We will be White on Boards 2 and 4 as if it was a normal home match.) Once again tonight, the smaller room will be used for the inter-club matches and the larger one for all other chess. - 06/06/2005 - The club's Rapid Play (30/30) tournament continues this Monday with Rounds 5 and 6 for those not involved in Inter-club Grade matches. This is a tournament where you don't have to play every week, so inter-club team members can still play. The winner is determined by strike rate out of players who have played at least 16 games out of a possible 24. There will also be a handicap prize. The Director of Play is Norman Greenwood. Rounds 7 and 8 will be played on Monday 20 June. [Jonathan Adams]
- 06/06/2005 - There are still a few postponed games from the club championships (A and C Grades only) to be played. The list of postponed games is on the web site . Next Monday night, being the Queen’s Birthday Weekend holiday, would be a great time to play these games, if possible. Please make contact with your opponent to arrange this. If you can’t play then you will need to arrange a mutually convenient time and place with your opponent. One possibility is a Tuesday night at the North Sydney club or one of the Mondays at the same as (and in the same room as) the 30/30 games. Don’t forget the club champs time control is 90 moves for the game + 30 seconds per move. Setting 23 on the Fischer clocks with an increment of 30 seconds. [Jonathan Adams]

- 14/05/2005 - Forthcoming lectures at North Sydney: Following the very successful lecture series by Simon Easterbrook-Smith in 2001, 2003 and 2004 and by Robert Goris in 2002, Robert and Simon have agreed to make a joint presentation this year. The lecture material for previous years can be downloaded from the Chess Club's Website. Subject to confirmation from the presenters, a series of five lectures will be held on Thursday nights during May, June and July in the Celebrity Room (Auditorium) from 19 May 2005 commencing 7.30pm It is intended to increase the scope of the lectures this year to meet the needs of members with more advanced chess-playing skills (up to 1850 rating strength is suggested) as well catering for members with lower ratings who have been regular attendees at lectures in previous years.
