News from 2007
- 20/12/2007 - Congratulations to Michael Morris and Jimmy Burt who won the 2 final divisions of the "Pocket Knight" rapid chess at our Christmas party on Monday night. Michael had an 100% record for the whole night. Participants were initially split into 2 groups to establish and A Grade and a B Grade. The club will now break until 7 January when we will be open again for friendly games.
- 11/12/2007 - At last night's AGM the following Committee was elected for the 2007-2008 year:
President: Chris Dimock,
Vice President: Gordon Struk,
Secretary: Tom Accola,
Treasurer: Norman Greenwood,
Games Captain: Tze Weng Foong,
Webmaster: Martin van Elmpt,
Committee members: Ruth Zalai, Alex Papp (Junior Representative), Martin Lakeland and Steven Liu.
Positions of Leagues Club rep and Publicity Officer to be decided by the committee (which meets 14 January). Note that Gordon Miller, Jonathan Adams and Jacob Graham were unavailable for re-election.
Coaching by GM Dejan Antic at 7pm at the club starts 21 Jan.
Subscription stayed the same at $15 per member– a new surcharge for non-members of NSWCA was passed - if we did not accept it no tournaments at the club could be rated. - 11/12/2007 Congratulations to Arno Vogelman who has won the Spring Handicap Tournament and to Jacques Horringa who has won the Biggest Upset prize.
We hope to see you all at the Christmas party next Monday night 17 Dec. We will be playing a fun variant of chess called “pocket knight”, with probably a 15-15 time limit (depending on number of players). - 07/12/2007 - Congratulations to Steffen Bayani who has won the Spring Tournament by a clear point. Second and third places are still in doubt with Jack Mejzini a certain placegetter on 7.0 points. There is a mathamatical possibility that any one of Tze Weng Foong and Steven Liu on 6.0 points with a game in hand, Gordon Struk on 5.5 with a game to play and James Burt, Chris Dimock, Jonathan Adams and Norman Greenwood all on 5.0 with a game to play can end up a placegetter. Where possible, postponements will be played after the AGM on Monday 10 December.
In the Handicap Section Steffen Bayani leads with 8.0 Handicap points from Jack Mejzini 7.5 points but, as Open Section winners, both are ineligible for a Handicap Prize. As a result the Handicap winner on 7.5 Handicap points is likely to be Arno Vogelman (1223) who has a lower rating than Martin Van Elmpt (1359) also on 7.5 Handicap points although George Varda (1194) on 7.0 Handicap points has a game to play and can supplant Arno.
At the moment Jacques Horringa has the biggest Upset win and is unlikely to be overtaken.
* 23/11/2007 - Our club Annual General Meeting and presentation of prizes will be on Monday 10 December. Our last formal night for the year is 17 December, which will be our chess-themed Christmas party with some drinks and nibbles. The results and postponements from Round 8 are now on this web site under "Tournament Results". Round 9 (of 9) will be played on Monday 3 Dec. - 16/11/2007 - The draw for Round 8 of the Spring Tournament together with progress results is on this web site under "Tournament Results". Round 8 will be played on Monday 19 Nov. 26 Nov. will be a postponements night.
- 08/11/2007 - The draw for Round 7 of the Spring Tournament together with progress results is on this web site under "Tournament Results". Round 7 will be played on Monday 12 Nov. Many games will start late (target 8.15) owing to a committee meeting that night which starts at 7.15.
- 24/10/2007 - The draw for Round 6 of the Spring Tournament together with progress results is on this web site under "Tournament Results". Please let Jonathan Adams (0425 304 187; jdadams1@optusnet.com.au) know if you cannot play on any Monday night- and if it is not until the day itself that you know you can’t play, please SMS him before 5.30 PM (so that your opponent can hopefully be notified). Thanks. Note that the "Little Board" results (both legs) are now also available under "Tournament Results".
- 18/10/2007 - Manly put up a good fight in the Little Board match v Norths. We only lost the second leg 9-8, which means Norths won the match over 2 legs by only 3 points. Not bad since they outrated us and had a lot of our dual members playing for them to keep the numbers up.
- 09/10/2007 - Next Monday night is our "Little Board" match against Norths at home. Please let Norman Greenwood know (0431 234 741 or email normg74@mysoul.com.au) if you are available to be picked for our team. Those not playing will be able to play Spring tournament postponed games (see file post.xls under "Tournament Results", 2007 Spring Tournament and Handicap Championship) or friendly games.
- 18/09/2007 - YouTube Humorous Simul!
- 14/09/2007 - Results, Progress scores and Postponed games for the nine round Spring Tournament (including the Handicap Tournament) can be seen under the "Tournament Results" tab in this web site. The draw for Round 2 is there now.
- 07/09/3007 - Steffen Bayani (who returned to the club this year after last playing here in the 1990s) won the play-off for the title of Allegro (15 minutes chess) champion with Vice President Gordon Struk 2-1. 3rd equal in the Allegro were Steven Liu and our President Chris Dimock. Steven Liu's performance was notable as he only played 8 games (out of 12) and won them all. Steffen Bayani and Gordon Struk each scored 9 out of 12. The Manly Spring tournament (11 rounds at 90 minutes each plus 30 seconds per move) starts this coming Monday night.
- 21/08/2007 - The Winter 30/30 tournament has now finished. The overall winner was Steven Liu and the winner of the handicap event for players Under 1500 was Mick Waters (who also finished second overall). Because any player can only win one prize, second overall went to Steffen Bayani and third to Gordon Struk. Last night the 12 rounds Allegro 15 minute chess started and the leader with 4/4 is Steven Liu. This tournament continues the next 2 Monday nights then the Manly Spring tournament starts. Entries are now being accepted for the Spring. Please contact Jonathan Adams (0425 304 187) or Norman Greenwood (0431 234 741).

- 22/06/2007 - Our inter-club teams are having mixed success. See http://nswca.org.au/gradematches/allgrade.htm for details. 8 rounds of the 30/30 have now been played and the leader is Steven Liu with 5 out of 5 played.
- 11/06/2007 - Congratulations to Steven Liu who finished second in the club championships A Grade after drawing with Alex Papp tonight.
- 09/06/2007 - Chess is on as usual on Monday 11 June. If you wish to play postponed games from the club champs (and there are still a number) you must either play this night or one week later. - 28/05/2007 - Congratulations to Mark De Groen, who has once again won the club championship. Second place is yet to be determined. Tonight there are championships postponements, inter-club games and 30/30 games happening.
- 17/05/2007 - Next Monday 21 May there are multiple things happening (as well as a rugby league game at Brookie between Manly and the Broncos which will put parking at a premium): 1. Our U 1700 and U 1500 teams travel to Rooty Hill to play. 2. Our U 1300 team hosts Rooty Hill at home. 3. Postponed Games for all Grades of the club champs can be played and should be given precedence over 4. 4. It is the first night of the 24 round Winter 30/30 tournament. There are no other remaining scheduled nights for postponements. NB. It is up to you to arrange your postponed games - the Arbiters will not do it for you. If you have more than one, you will need to play on a night other than Monday as agreed with your opponent. It is possible to play at the club on other nights, but a quiet room cannot be guaranteed. Contact Jonathan Adams or Norman Greenwood (0431234741) to organise access to a chess set and clock if required. The tournament will be closed off on Monday 18 June. Any games still outstanding then will be recorded as a loss to both players. If one player genuinely endeavours to play and the other can’t, the former will win the game by forfeit.
- 09/05/2007 - Well we put up a good fight against Norths last night, only losing 7.5 to 5.5. Congratulations to the 5 winners for us - who included 4 committee members! Tze Weng Foong (our webmaster), Jonathan Adams (Games Captain), Chris Dimock (President), Tom Accola (Secretary) and Bob Moxom. Matthew Carden drew his game.
- 09/05/2007 - Our next tournament begins on Monday 21 May. It is the Club Winter Tournament [Rapid Play 30 minutes each for the whole game] Rounds 1 and 2. This tournamant will run for 12 nights but you do not have to play every night. This means that people in inter-club teams can still enter. The standard FIDE rules for 30 minutes chess apply. The club's Rapid Play (30/30) tournament goes through to August 13 (2 rounds per night). The winner is determined by strike rate out of players who have played at least 16 games out of a possible 24. There will also be a handicap prize. The Arbiters, one of whom will act each night, for this event are Norman Greenwood, Gordon Struk, Jonathan Adams and Tze Weng Foong.
The Rules
Apart from the obvious ones, like 30 minutes for all your moves or you lose, our special rules are:
* This is a tournament where you don't have to play every week,
so inter-club team members can still play.
* The winner is determined by strike rate out of players who
have played at least 16 games out of a possible 24.
* There will also be a handicap prize. This goes to the highest
strike rate by a player Under 1500 or unrated who has played
at least 16 games.
* Once you have played 16 games your strike rate cannot go down - only up.
* Strike rate is percentage of won games converted to a decimal.
So 3 out of 4 = 75% = 0.75 strike rate.
Question : Winners play winners? or Equal Strike rates play Equal strike rates?
Answer: The draw is done as much as possible on strike rate, so someone with 1 out of 1
= strike rate of 100 may play someone with 4 out of 4 e.g. The draw is worked out by a program developed by NSWCA Ratings Officer Steve Carratt called "wchess".

It is up to you to arrange your postponed games - the Arbiter will not do it for you. If you have more than one, you will need to play on a night other than Monday as agreed with your opponent. It is possible to play at the club on other nights, but a quiet room cannot be guaranteed. Contact Jonathan Adams (0425304187)or Norman Greenwood (0431234741) to organise access to a chess set and clock if required. The tournament will be closed off on Monday 18 June.
